A little history about our city of St. John's...
Let's talk about Conception Bay South. Locals know that it's one of Newfoundland's newest towns. It didn't officially exist till 1973. This is when eight communities came together to form what is now known as CBS. These communities are Topsail, Manuel's, Chamberlains, Long Pond, Foxtrap, Kelligrews, Upper Gullies and Seal Cove. The village of Lawrence Pond joined the rest in 1985. Most people think it was England that named it; however, it was actually named by Portugal… Conception Bay traces its roots back to Portuguese explorers. They named it Baia de Conceicao. This name first appears on historic maps dating back to about 1505. This makes it one of the oldest places in North America.
What about a fun fact? The bay was used as a pirate hideout! A pirate named Peter Easton used this area as a hub in the 1610s. Coins of Spanish descent have been uncovered in this area.
